Omniva, the leading logistics company for parcel delivery in the Baltics, has introduced a new generation of postal infrastructure — community parcel lockers — with the first ten already installed in villages in Põlva County, Estonia. Following successful implementation in Estonia, the expansion of this service infrastructure is planned for Latvia and Lithuania this autumn.
The battery-powered parcel lockers operate without electricity or a fixed internet connection. They are available to all local residents and delivery companies. These modern devices are particularly well-suited for rural areas and less-populated regions across the Baltics.
“Community parcel lockers are designed for smaller populated areas and residential neighborhoods where installing traditional parcel lockers is more complicated,” explains Gusts Muzikants, a member of the Omniva Group board. “They can be installed in just 15 minutes and do not depend on electricity or fixed internet access. The new community parcel lockers are suitable for both urban and rural areas in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.”
Just like traditional parcel lockers, community lockers notify recipients via SMS or a notification in the Omniva mobile app when a parcel is delivered and include an access code. Each compartment can hold multiple shipments and can also be used to send parcels via the Omniva self-service platform.
These parcel lockers will also be available to other logistics companies that sign a cooperation agreement with Omniva.
A broader rollout of the community locker infrastructure will begin this autumn across Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Over the next five years, Omniva plans to install approximately 700 devices in Estonia, aiming to have a community parcel locker every 300 meters from residential homes. Similar plans are in place for Latvia and Lithuania.
In the future, these community parcel lockers could also serve as access points for universal postal services if the necessary regulatory changes are made. This would mean that residents could receive not only parcels but also letters, newspapers, and magazines — securely and with delivery notifications.
